🔥 The Great Fire of 1805, Detroit, MI

Digest Exclusive: Father Gabriel Richard coined Detroit's iconic Latin motto during this crisis to stop the traumatized population from abandoning the frontier.

The phrase Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus, "We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes," became official on Detroit's seal in 1827.

Now resting at the center of the city's flag, it stands as a permanent tribute to the day Detroit was literally reborn from the ashes.

✈️ Northwest Flight 2501 Vanished in 1950

Digest Exclusive: No intact bodies were ever found from the crash, only fragmented remains that were buried in unmarked communal plots following standard local procedures of the era.

These sites were quickly forgotten when public attention abruptly shifted to the outbreak of the Korean War just two days later.

Thanks to researchers tracing un-indexed sexton registries, both locations are now marked with black granite memorials to pay proper respect to the fifty-eight lives lost.

⚾ Detroit Tigers Legend Mickey Cochrane

Digest Exclusive: Cochrane retired with a historic .320 batting average, which remains the highest career mark for any catcher in American League history.

Tragically, his active playing career was violently cut short in May 1937 when a near-fatal inside fastball fractured his skull.

His cultural legacy was so immense that an Oklahoma lead miner named his newborn son after the baseball star—future Yankee icon Mickey Mantle.

Aliza’s great grandfather attended the Detroit Walk to Freedom in 1963 and likely got to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. debut his "I Have a Dream" speech.

John Donaldson Voelker was born on June 29, 1903. Writing under the pen name Robert Traver, this Ishpeming-born lawyer served as a Michigan Supreme Court Justice and authored the landmark legal thriller Anatomy of a Murder.

His life, legal career, and evocative literary works forever captured the distinct cultural spirit, isolation, and legal color of the Upper Peninsula.

Renowned as one of the most spectacular displays in North America, the annual fireworks over the Detroit River light up the summer sky with a massive show.

Established in 1959, the fireworks honor Detroit’s partnership with Windsor, Canada Day (July 1st) and America's Independence Day (July 4th).

The Fourth of July is my absolute favorite holiday, and this year brings one of the most historic celebrations of my lifetime. This Saturday marks a massive milestone: 250 years of American independence.

While we strictly cover Michigan history around here, we wouldn't be in a position to share these stories if it weren't for the brave folks who stood up two and a half centuries ago. For them, I am forever grateful.
