Welcome Home, {{first_name|default:Michigander}}!

This Halloween marked 100 years since Harry Houdini’s death in Detroit, Michigan. Last year, I shared a video highlighting his final show in Detroit and because my channel was so new at the time, very few people saw the video. I have selected that video as this week’s MI Moment.

MI Moments 🎬

🪄 Houdini’s final show, 100 years ago.

On October 24, 1926, Harry Houdini performed his last act at Detroit’s Garrick Theatre.

A week later—on Halloween night—he died at Grace Hospital from a ruptured appendix.

Detroit still honors the places tied to his mysterious final week.

Did you know Houdini’s final show was in Detroit?

Detroit Historical Society

Founded in 1921 to preserve the region's rich heritage, the Detroit Historical Society extends beyond its museum walls through a dynamic Speaker’s Bureau that brings history directly into local community centers.

This November there are many free events with off-site presentations across the metro area, including Becoming Hockeytown - The Detroit Red Wings at 100, Detroit Lions and the Early NFL, and Detroit Movie City - A Century of Film in the Motor City.

These expert-led talks utilize deep archival research to reveal the small-town roots of early gridiron franchises, the century-long evolution of the iconic Winged Wheel, and the fascinating local history of cinema production.
